Letter to Governor Patterson regarding the Convention Center

Hon. David Paterson
Governor
State of New York
State Capitol
Albany, New York 12224

Dear Governor Paterson:

Enclosed is a letter I sent to Governor Spitzer in June of 2007 stating my concerns about the cost of the proposed New York State convention center/hotel to be constructed in Albany. My main concern was how the project was going to be funded and the partial reliance on Public Lands Law Sec. 19-A money dedicated to the City of Albany. The Division of the Budget answered the original letter and said that they were requiring the Albany Convention Center Authority to develop a cost estimate for the project. This has since been done and the projected cost is now almost $400 million.

I now have an even greater concern about the 19-A state aid funds for the City of Albany. I have been told that if the convention center project is not built due to financial constraints, the City of Albany will not be entitled to the 19-A funds. I hope this is not true, for Albany faces major financial distress as it is, and without the 19-A money, the City will be placed in a financial hole that will burden the taxpayers with a tax increase of unmanageable proportion.

Please review the state legislation that created the Albany Convention Center Authority and established the 19-A funding schedule for the City of Albany to see if the proposed state aid will continue to be sent to Albany should the convention center project be delayed of completely taken off the table at this time.

Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

Sincerely,
